Virginia Hiking Trails

Virginia holds wonders for the hiker who loves to explore and travel down the road less traveled (so to speak!). I could list hundreds of recommended trails here for you but I will keep this article brief. I am going to write about some of my very favorite Virginia hiking trails.

Indian Gap Trail

This trail is of a moderate standard and leads to Indian Rocks which are an amazing formation. It is only a short trail at .3 of a mile but the Blue Ridge Parkway presents a challenge.

White Oak Flats

If you want an easier trail then White Oak Flats is for you. It is only .1 mile and is a forest trail near Dancing Creek.

Otter Creek Trail

This is a longer hike at 3.5 miles. Otter creek is a great camping spot though so if you want to hike and then stay overnight, this is a good choice.

Apple Orchard Falls Trail

1.2 miles long, Apple Orchard Falls Trail is quite a strenuous hike. You start in Sunset Field and hike your way to an awe inspiring view of Apple Orchards Falls. This is a National Recreation Trail.

Fallingwater Cascades Trail

This 1.6 mile long National Recreation Trail is for the middle to advanced hiker. You’ll hike through mountain forests and reach a beautiful view of Fallingwater Cascades. You’ll also see beautiful rhododendron which make this trail unique.

Harkening Hills Trail

This one starts at the Peaks of Otter visitor center. It is 3.3 miles long and takes you to Harkening Hill which is 3300 feet. This mountain is one of three that make up Peaks of Otter.

Sharp Top Trail

Sharp Top Trail is a challenging 1.5 mile hike which takes you to the peak of Sharp Top Mountain; they don’t call it sharp top for nothing! It is a 3875 foot summit and the view is stunning from the top, as you can imagine.

These are just a few of the shorter hiking trails in Virginia that I can wholeheartedly recommend to you.
