Oahu is paradise for the keen hiker. Everyone knows how beautiful Hawaii, so you can only imagine what you’ll find when you go hiking off the beaten track. The great thing about hiking in Oahu is that it’s free and you don’t even have to pay for maps or hiking guides. So really there is no excuse not to go hiking in Oahu!
One of the most popular hikes in Oahu is Diamond Head. I did it when I was a little under the weather fitness wise and boy was it tiresome! However anyone with reasonable fitness can complete this one and it is very popular with tourists. When you reach the top of the 560 feet climb you’ll have spectacular views of Honolulu.
The Aiea Loop Trail is another great hike. IT is located in Keaiwa Heiau State Park. You’ll hike through beautiful eucalypt and koa forests, see views of canyons and the historic Pearl Harbor. Although half of the 4.5 mile hike is through a residential area, this trail shows you parts of Oahu you would not normally see.
On the Windward side of Oahu is the Maunawilie Falls Trail. It is a simple1.25 mile hike so is suitable for everyone or just for a leisurely stroll. You’ll walk through beautiful blooming white and yellow ginger if you hike from May to October. At the end is a long flight of descending steps which lead to a beautiful waterfall and pool. What a way to finish a hike!
Hawaii’s Trail and Access System provides detailed information about hikes in Oahu and they also provide trail safety guidelines. You could also contact the American Hiking Society for a list of Oahu trails if you want to plan your trip.
