Camping Hiking Recipes

There is really no limit to what you can take and cook on a camping and hiking trip. With a bit of imagination, home cooked meals can be whipped up in the middle of the bush!

Hiking recipes can consist of various types of freeze dried foods which can then be mixed with other foods. For example:

  • Chicken
  • Dried meats
  • Omelettes
  • Noodles
  • Soup
  • Dried fruits

One of my favorite hiking recipes is to take some freeze dried chicken such as that provided by Mountain House and to mix it into some soup. This is a delicious warm meal and especially tasty on those cold outdoor nights.

All meat should be cooked to a temperature of 160F. This is to kill bacteria like E.Coli which can be very harmful, even fatal, to humans. Take a thermometer with you to measure the temperature of meat and ensure that all pinkness is removed before consuming.

Rice recipes are also easy to put together with many companies offering freeze dried rice. You can then mix this with meat and vegetables for a hearty meal.

It is also possible to buy powdered mixes for pancakes which are a great hiking breakfast idea. You can also do the same for pasta meals and take along some powdered sauce as well.

Drinks which can be consumed when you are camping or backpacking include fruit juices and fresh water. Take your own water if you are traveling for a short period, or boil water from water sources if you are traveling for longer periods of time. Boiling the water removes bacteria which is often present in outdoor water sources such as lakes and streams.

As you can see, camping and hiking recipes need not be bland or tasteless. With a bit of effort you can really take the taste of home on your outdoor adventure.
